This page is an archive of ERRC News and Points for 2014

The 2014 Drivers Points  |  The 2014 Navigators Points

Ben Smith and Georgina Clark are Champions

The results of the 2014 Sportway Tyres Endurance Road Rally Championship are now final! Congratulations are due to all the Award Winners in a season that has offered a great variety of good events.

Particular congratulations to 1st overall driver Ben Smith who wins the Torqbar Trophy and to champion navigator Georgina Clark who wins the Restore Nutrition Trophy after an outright win on the final round. Second driver was championship regular Paul Freeth followed by David Lobb in third. Navigators’ runner up was Simon Harris followed by Matt Fowle who took three outright victories from the four events he did.

Points were close in both categories with 22 points covering the top five drivers and fewer than 12 points covering the top five navigators. It is great to see that the top two navigators gained significant points for organising events, proving that it is no disadvantage in the championship to ‘do your bit’ by organising. Thanks are due to all event organisers and their teams.

Awards will be presented at the annual ERRC Prize Giving Lunch on 18th January 2015 at the Oxfordshire Inn. Please let Dick Appleton know if you are coming.

Great Bustard Rally

The final round of the ERRC, the Great Bustard Rally run by Salisbury & Shaftesbury CC, lived up to its tough reputation despite being somewhat shorter than in previous years. Selectif action majored on 3 runs of a 15 mile course in Worthy farm, in between which competitors visited 20 other shorter selectifs in Somerset, Dorset and Wiltshire. The event concluded with a short sharp road rally offering 9 regularity controls and 10 TCs with a variety of navigation. The weather was fine and dry, though the roads were very slippery from the recent rain, once darkness fell competitors had to contend with thick & patchy fog, causing problems for some.

The event was won by Owen Turner navigated on this occasion by Georgina Clark, Matthew & Tim Tordoff took an excellent runner up spot and the top 3 was completed by Ben Smith & Simon Harris.

Final championship Drivers and Navigators points have been calculated and will be declared final in seven days if there are no queries.

Exmoor Endurance Rally

Thirty seven started the Exmoor Rally in Taunton this weekend. While it was wet and miserable during signing on, the weather cleared for a superb day in the best Selectifs Exmoor has to offer. This was followed after dark by a short but challenging road rally route in the tight lanes and forest tracks of the area. The competition was close, winners being non championship locals Phil Harris/Liam Burns, second by 2 seconds only was Owen Turner navigated by past champion navigator Kevin Ablitt. They were followed home by Paul Heal and leading navigator Matt Fowle. The first ‘all championship’ crew were Paul Sharp & Gruff Parry in fourth. Congratulations to Georgina, Chris House and their team for another great event.

Going in to the final round, the Great Bustard, leading Drivers are David Lobb, Ed Clark, and Paul Freeth covered by 6 points. Navigators are not so close, Matt Fowle leading Lizzie Pope by 9 points, followed by Georgina Clark another 6 points in arrears. Lowest scores will have to be dropped at the Bustard so the whole thing is still open.

Great Bustard Rally Entries open on 8th October and of course the event runs on 29th November.

Tanking along on the Bournemouth Rally

Graham Dance and his team put on an excellent summer event, most tests being at the tank training grounds at Bovingdon in Dorset. Event winners were Jamie Turner with Matt Fowle with second championship team David Lobb/Lizzie Pope in fourth, in fifth were non contender Dave Harris guided round by Worth Birkill followed in 6th by regulars Paul Freeth/Chris Head.

Top Drivers in the Championship are now David Lobb, Paul Freeth & Ed Clark split by 8 points only. While the Navigators table is jointly headed by Lizzie Pope and Matt Fowle, followed by Chris Head only 3 points adrift.

Entries for the next round, the Exmoor on 4th October open on 18th August.

Bournemouth Rally News

More details of the next ERRC round on 16th August are available from Bournemouth Rally Release2 The Regulations will be available later this month.

Bullnose Rally a triumph!

The Bullnose Rally was run this weekend as an all new event organised by Oxford MC under Simon Lassam as Clerk of the Course. A fresh and excellent event was put on with no fewer than 40 selectifs in the area round Bicester. It is great to welcome a good new event to the Championship.

The event was won by Owen Turner/Matt Fowle from Ben Smith/Simon Harris followed by the Tordoffs. Owen & Matt did not have it all their own way, being hard pressed by Paul Sharp/Gruff Parry until their gearbox cried enough.

See the points table for current championship positions. DRIVERS | NAVIGATORS

There is a short break now until the Bournemouth Rally on 16th August. Further details will be published on 4th June and regs will be available from 16th June at

Ross Endurance Rally

Three quarters of the crews starting the Ross Endurance were championship contenders. After a day of heavy storms and sunny intervals, Jamie Turner/Matt Fowle emerged as winners of a friendly and slickly run event. Second and now leading the championship were Paul Sharp/Gruff Parry and Ed and Georgina Clark were an excellent 3rd overall, leading home class 4 by a significant margin. For full championship standings see the updated points tables.

ERRC Calendar Change

With the Ross Endurance almost upon us and regs out for the Bullnose it is with regret that we have to confirm that it has not been possible to find a new date for the postponed Xpart rally, despite herculean efforts by the organisers. The championship this year will therefore consist of six events and in accordance with Regulation 8.2, contenders will drop one lowest score only.

2014 XPart Rally Postponed

We're very sorry to announce that the 2014 XPart Rally, due to run on February 15th/16th, has been postponed. Here is the full statement from the rally organisers:

"Dear All,

It is with great disappointment that we have had to postpone the 2014 XPart rally.

Like much of the UK, the area has been subjected to an unprecedented amount of rain water and many of our landowners who have supported this event from the outset have expressed concern regarding damage to tracks due to how much water is present.

We have worked tirelessly over the last two weeks to try and resolve this situation but with yet more rain falling since the weekend it has left us with no choice but to issue this statement.

The XPart landowners are still willing and keen to continue to support the event and have helped us in many reroutes and in one notable case trying to roll and drain some of the worst of the water away! It is through their goodwill that we use their land and many have acknowledged that we have taken this tough decision in order that we will be allowed to return.

The hotel has been advised of the decision and those of you that have booked the hotel must cancel their booking now.

Plans are afoot to move the date to later in the year when hopefully the weather will be kinder to our ventures, of course you will all be informed as soon as a date can be agreed with the Championship and our landowners.

We cannot express our apologies enough to those that have entered and also to those who have pledged their support to assist in the event either in the lead up to and on the day but please understand the difficult decision we have been forced to make.

We will obviously make a full refund of entry fees to those that have paid and we ask for your continued support for the new date for the 2014 XPart rally. Cheques have not been banked, and will be destroyed. PayPal payments will be refunded directly, and those who paid by bank transfer will be sent a cheque.

Kindest regards,

Jamie, Bob and the XPart rally team"

Regs out for South West Endurance Rally

Regs are now out for the South West Endurance Rally on 8th/9th March. The organisers are offering a huge choice of different events in one, so make sure you enter the correct one. To gain championship points you must enter either the ‘Classic South West Endurance Rally’ or the ‘South West Endurance Championship Rally’. Points will be calculated based on the overall positions in these two rallies combined at the end of the latter (shorter) event. Therefore, if you enter the Classic Endurance Rally and retire after the point at which the Championship rally finishes, you will still get championship points. There is therefore no risk to your Championship position as a result of entering the Classic SW Endurance Rally.
